Scan a custom location for virus and spyware activity using Microsoft Security Essentials

Sometimes you don’t need to scan your entire computer for viruses and spyware (also known as malware). Maybe you only want to scan a certain folder, file, or CD/DVD before you access it to make sure there isn’t malware on it. Not a problem. Microsoft Security Essentials can do that.

Download/Install Microsoft Security Essentials

Scan a location for viruses and malware

  1. Open Microsoft Security Essentials (Start, All Programs, Microsoft Security Essentials).

  2. Select Custom under Scan options and then click the Scan now button.

  3. Browse to and check the location(s) you want Microsoft Security Essentials and then click OK.

  4. Microsoft Security Essentials will scan those locations for viruses and spyware.

Quickly scan a file or folder for malware

You can quickly and easily scan a file or folder for viruses and spyware by simply right-clicking it and choosing Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials.
