Install Microsoft Security Essentials

Exchange your slow, crappy, expensive antivirus software with Microsoft’s fast, great, free antivirus solution.

Tired of those confusing and expensive antivirus programs that slow down your computer? I was too until I found Microsoft’s Security Essentials antivirus solution.

Microsoft Security Essentials doesn’t slow down your computer. It does a very good job at catching viruses and spyware (also known as malware) and will successfully remove all the malware it finds. It doesn’t have all the useless features you don’t need. It’s a lean and mean virus catching machine. Oh, I forgot to mention that it’s also FREE for personal use or 10 or less PCs in a business!

Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials

Before you install MSE you need to uninstall any antivirus or anti-spyware programs your computer has. Running multiple antivirus programs is not a good idea at all. It won’t double the protection.

  1. Go to the Microsoft Security Essentials website.
  2. Download Microsoft Security Essentials.

  3. If your browser asks what to do with the file being downloaded, choose to run it.

  4. You may be hit with a UAC prompt. Choose yes to start the install process.
  5. Click the Next button to start the install.

  6. Choose Accept.

  7. Choose to Join the Customer Experience Improvement program and then click Next.

  8. Choose to make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on and then click Next.

  9. Click Install.

  10. Once the installation is finished, choose to scan your computer for potential threats after updating and then click Finish.

  11. Your computer will start downloading the antivirus definitions MSE uses to find and remove viruses and spyware.

  12. Once it’s done downloading the antivirus definitions it will do a quick scan.

I highly recommend running a full scan after the quick scan to make sure your entire computer is clean. Running a full scan also makes future scans run quicker.
